Context

North Oakland

The neighborhood that shaped — and was shaped by — this corner.

North Oakland is a neighborhood rich in history and community, and this stretch of Martin Luther King Jr Way sits at a meaningful crossroads of culture and civil-rights history.

The area is associated with the early Black Panther Party and with generations of Black-owned businesses and institutions. A bakery here was part of a longer story of neighborhood gathering places — the shops and counters where a community keeps its routines and its memory.

A changing place

Like much of Oakland, the neighborhood continues to change. Remembering places like It’s All Good Bakery is one way a community holds onto its history through that change.
